The City of San Antonio Offers Limited Property Tax Relief
San Antonio property owners pay for the privilege of living within city limits through higher-than-average property taxes. Rates here are substantially higher than in the surrounding communities, so it's not uncommon for residents to experience difficulties in meeting their property tax obligations.
The City provides little in the way of tax relief to most property owners. There are only three possible property tax exemptions that can reduce the amount due:
- A $15,000 over-65 homestead exemption for seniors.
- An exemption between $5,000 and $12,000 for disabled veterans.
- A $12,500 disabled residence homestead exemption for individuals who qualify as disabled with the Social Security Administration.
San Antonio Property Tax Information
The Bexar County Tax Assessor's Office handles property tax collection for the City of San Antonio. Unless a homeowner has prepaid their property taxes for the year, or paid the first half by the previous November 30th, the entire assessed amount is due on January 31st. Interest and penalties begin accruing on February 1st for delinquent property owners. On July 1st, the city adds a 15 to 20 percent collection fee to the outstanding balance, and their collection attorneys can begin tax suit proceedings against the property owner. To prevent a lawsuit, a property owner can pay the amount in full if they have the ability, or arrange a San Antonio property tax loan through Property Tax Funding.
