Fort Worth Property Owners Face High Property Tax Rates
Many Fort Worth property owners dread the arrival of their annual property tax bill, and for good reason -- the city's hefty property taxes are among the highest in the US. Fort Worth does provide a limited number of exemptions that allow qualifying individuals to offset the steep cost of owning property here.
- A 20-percent homestead exemption on property that is the primary residence of the owner.
- An additional $10,000 school tax exemption and a ceiling on property taxes for seniors over age 65.
- An additional $10,000 exemption for property owners who qualify as disabled with the Social Security Administration.
- A 100-percent exemption for qualifying disabled veterans.
Fort Worth Property Tax Payment Information
The Tarrant County Appraisal District assesses property taxes for the City of Fort Worth. Property owners can pay their taxes to the County Tax Assessor/Collector either in person, by phone, or online. Unless a property owner has paid half of their annual taxes by December 1st, the full amount is due the following January 31st. If a homeowner is unable to pay their property taxes, interest and penalties begin accruing February 1st. On July 1st, delinquent accounts are sent to the County's tax attorneys for collection, and a 20 percent penalty is added on top of the amount already owed. Unless a property owner pays the balance in full, they can be sued and potentially face a tax sale action of their property. If you are unable to pay your property taxes on time, you might consider a tax loan.
